Fogging vs Spray Disinfection for Commercial Sites in Eastern Ontario
Field note

This guide shares practical considerations based on the kinds of commercial facilities our team serves across Eastern Ontario.

Emerald Cleaners wrote this guide for commercial facilities in Eastern Ontario. It is operational advice for this topic, not a copied template and not medical or legal advice.

Start with the label, not the machine

After an illness cluster or a tenant request, managers in Kingston and Belleville often ask for “fogging.” Fogging is how a product is applied. It is not a disease-prevention promise and it is not automatically better than wiping. The product label, the surface, the ventilation and whether soil was removed first decide whether it is appropriate.

Emerald Cleaners offers assessed fogging and site-assessed cleaning and disinfection. We do not advertise kill-rates, hospital-grade slogans, or health outcomes. If a product cannot be used as labelled in your space, we will say no.

This article compares methods so you can brief a contractor. It is not medical, public-health or legal advice.

What spray or wipe disinfection is for

Manual application to agreed, compatible surfaces is the default when you can reach the touch points: handles, switches, washroom fixtures, reception counters, elevator buttons. Cleaning soil off the surface first is often required before a disinfectant can do what the label describes.

Contact time matters. A wipe that is dry in five seconds did not meet a ten-minute wet time. The scope should say which surfaces are included and which are not, including electronics and porous fabrics.

This method is visible and controllable. It is also labour. Large open rooms with lots of horizontal surfaces take time. That is a scheduling fact, not a reason to skip the wipe and hope a mist will replace it.

What fogging can and cannot do

Fogging may be considered when the site, the selected product, ventilation, vacancy time and surface compatibility support it. It is an application option inside a complete plan, not a standalone show.

Fogging does not excuse skipping soil removal where the label requires cleaning first. It does not automatically reach the underside of a keyboard or a washroom fixture that still has visible soil. Re-entry time must be coordinated with the site contact.

If the building cannot be vacated, or if occupants have constraints that conflict with the product, fogging may be the wrong tool. A walkthrough is how that decision is made.

How to brief the visit without over-claiming

Tell the contractor what prompted the request, which rooms you want included, when the building can be empty, and whether you already have a product preference. Do not ask anyone to certify that people will not get sick.

Ask them to put method, product, contact time, vacancy window and exclusions in writing. If two companies propose different methods, compare those sheets, not the drama of the equipment.

Schools, clinics and offices have different occupancy. A daycare cannot use the same vacancy window as an empty floor plate on a Sunday. Name the occupant type.

Where this sits beside regular cleaning

Nightly commercial cleaning is soil removal and presentation. A disinfection visit is a defined extra with its own chemistry. Do not fold an emergency request into a 30-minute nightly list and expect the same result.
