Stockrooms and Back-of-House: Retail Cleaning Stores Skip

Retail cleaning is more than the sales floor. Fitting-room adjacent stockrooms, receiving and staff washrooms in Eastern Ontario stores need a written back-of-house list.

The sales floor is not the whole store

Shoppers in Kingston and Belleville plazas judge aisles, glass and fitting rooms. Inspectors, insurers and staff judge the receiving door, the cardboard pile, the staff washroom and the floor behind the last fixture. Those rooms are where pests, slips and odours start.

This is not another Canadian retail opening checklist for the sales floor. It is the back-of-house list that generic checklists skip because it is not photogenic.

A nightly program that only runs a dust mop down the centre aisle will look fine on Instagram and fail at 6 a.m. when a staff member opens receiving.

Receiving, cardboard and the dirty line

Receiving floors collect grit from truck wells, broken pallet bits and winter salt. They need a defined clean, not leftover mop water from the sales floor. Keep a separate mop if you can. Do not drag receiving soil onto customer tile.

Cardboard is a pest harbour. The cleaning scope can include taking flattened cardboard to the designated bin. It cannot replace a pest-control contract. If you have activity, treat sanitation and exclusion as partners.

Write whether the crew may enter receiving after the alarm is set, and where the compactor key lives. After-hours retail is a security plan like any office.

Stockrooms, fitting-room overflow and staff areas

Stockrooms packed to the ceiling cannot be cleaned by magic. Ask managers to keep a walkway. The scope should say “exposed floor and reachable shelving edges,” not “detail every SKU.”

Fitting rooms belong on the customer list: floors, mirrors, pins, and the stall that always hides hangers. The overflow stock behind fitting rooms belongs on the back-of-house list so it is not forgotten.

Staff washrooms and the break table need the same standard as the public washroom. Staff will not protect a customer washroom they do not believe you maintain for them.

Floors: customer ceramic versus back-room concrete

Two floor types in one store means two methods. Do not strip a back room with the same assumption you use on sales VCT. Name the finishes on the quote visit.

Grout on the customer side still needs periodic specialty work. That is a project day, not a 15-minute add-on after cash-out.

Mats at the customer door and a scraper at receiving are both winter tools. Losing either one tracks the parking lot through the store.

How to add back-of-house to the quote

Walk the contractor from the parking lot through receiving to the sales floor, not the reverse. Photos of stockrooms help. Say whether you need recurring retail cleaning, a floor project, or both.

Plaza landlords sometimes own vestibules and not stockrooms. Know the line so you do not pay twice or leave a gap.
